Back in the ‘70s, Larry Spielholz, Cum Laude graduate of the SUNY Buffalo School of Accounting, decided that he needed to devote his life to building something important rather than keeping records for others who did. A young man in his twenties, using his savings and taking short-term loans from close friends and family, Larry purchased a “mom and pop” housewares store in Whitestone, New York. Among the many varied houseware items in this neighborhood shop, there was a rickety table for cutting spring roller shades, measuring tools for custom mini-blinds, and samples of woven wood shades. With the advent of vertical blinds, Larry immediately recognized that the world of window treatments was evolving rapidly – and that inventive minds at a company called Hunter Douglas were at work to create window coverings that were of superior quality, efficient and dramatic. In addition, he saw that homes and businesses could further be enhanced by combining the layering of hard window treatments with draperies and valances, and ultimately streamlining the controls with motorization. Larry was determined to advance the role of Larry’s Design Center as a primary dealer for Hunter Douglas and as a cutting edge window treatment design establishment. Larry’s dedication to the satisfaction of his clients and to provide superior products and services are his main goal. Eventually, Larry relocated Larry’s Design Center to its current location, Jericho Turnpike, Garden City Park, New York where he retains ownership of the building in which the business is housed. Larry wanted a home for his business so that it may grow for the next generation – his two daughters, Erica and Emily!

Lauren, Larry’s wife and business partner, brings her skills in design and technology to Larry’s Design Center. Lauren is a New York State Licensed Interior Designer (CID) and holds a degree in Interior Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is also a LEED Accredited Professional, a specialty that has enabled her to contribute her knowledge to the growing segment of environmental design. Enthusiastic and people oriented, Lauren enjoys working with clients and is committed to each project so that it is completed and installed with precision.

As Showroom Manager, Sharon has been an invaluable employee for over 20 years. Her dedication to Larry’s Design Center shines through daily as she takes painstaking care of every single client from the inquiry stages, to coordinating, with accuracy, each detail of an order, to following through tirelessly with the installation process. She is a patient and sympathetic customer service provider and is often the first voice you hear when you call. When she isn’t working, Sharon enjoys spending time with her husband, Tommy, and playing her guitar.

The creative success at Larry’s Design Center is often the result of our talented Window Treatment Designer, Paula. Extensively educated in design, Paula first attended C.W. Post. Later she studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology where she was recognized by professors for producing professional quality sketches. Paula enjoys using a pad and pencil as a visual aid to design and select window treatments for clients. She is an expert on color, pattern, fabric selection, and the coordination of hard and soft window treatments. Paula’s energy is boundless! This is no surprise. When not with clients, you can find Paula at her favorite place, the gym! We are lucky to have had her on our winning team for over ten years.
