Unique Design of Honeycomb Cellular Shades

Innovative Custom Honeycomb Shades

Hunter Douglas first introduced the honeycomb shade in 1985, in response to an energy crisis that impacted most of the world during the 1970s. The first honeycomb shade, known as Duette®, which has been redesigned throughout the years, remains the industry leader in energy-efficient window treatments. Duette® is uniquely designed to not only provide a superior level of energy-efficiency, but also to be a beautiful design complement to your home’s decor.

Insulation

Honeycomb shades, also called cellular shades for their unique construction of multiple layers and sizes of cells, does an excellent job of trapping hot and cold air. During colder winter months, heat from your home escapes to the outdoors through your windows. In the warmer summer months, the unwanted outside heat flows into your home through these same windows. Honeycomb shades provide insulation, reducing your household energy consumption, creating a noticeable decrease in your home heating and cooling costs, and creating a more comfortable interior temperature.

Solar Heat Control

Heat provided by the sun, known as solar heat, is a great thing during the cold winter months. With insulating honeycomb shades, it’s possible to trap some of this solar heat and help keep your home warm. In the same way, during the hot summer months, honeycomb shades can help to reflect the sun’s rays and help insulate your home from the inside, trapping the cool air in, reducing the workload on your air conditioning unit. For maximum energy efficiency, Duette® Architella® features a honeycomb in a honeycomb design, which boasts three distinct layers of cells to insulate against unwanted temperature changes.

Daylighting

The lighting of rooms inside your home with natural light rather than artificial light is known as “daylighting”. By using this daylighting practice, we minimize the need for other types of artificial lighting, which will reduce home energy consumption. Hunter Douglas offers a unique feature known as Top Down/Bottom Up, which allows you to raise and lower the top and bottom of the shade independently from each other.  Close the bottom half of the shade to increase privacy without sacrificing natural light, or you can close the top half of the shade to block glare from the sun.

Design Features and Operating Systems

Hunter Douglas’ honeycomb shades are available in hundreds of color, fabric, texture, and opacity options to complement your existing home decor. Hunter Douglas offers three different pleat sizes depending on the level of insulation you desire. If light control is a concern, most Hunter Douglas shades are available with Duolite™, which maximizes the room-darkening ability of the shades. In addition to the convenient Top Down/Bottom Up feature mentioned earlier, Hunter Douglas also offers the Vertiglide® operating system on Duette® and Duette® Architella® shades. This operating system, which allow for vertical mounting and operating of honeycomb shades, is ideal for sliding glass doors.
